So in July, I am going to study Khmer every day on my own for at least 30 minutes. Sounds easy, right? (And yes, I know there are 31 days in July - 30x30 is just so much more poetic.)
Although we've been here for 16 months and counting, we've never studied language full-time. We've done it in stops and starts, normally trying to keep a twice-weekly lesson schedule with a Khmer tutor. But because of our hectic travel schedule, it doesn't always work out. And when I don't study, it's amazing how little I retain of any new words I hear day-to-day.
Today, I studied for 30 minutes by writing down the Khmer names for various household objects - stove, mirror, toothbrush, etc. - and taping them to said item. I'm sure our cleaner will get a kick out of it when she comes in Monday. But if I can actually remember the names after a month of staring at them, then I will consider it a success.
Anyone else challenging themselves this month?
