Sorry For the Delay...

Wow, I realized I really dropped the ball after that last post! I had every intention of blogging throughout our trip to Europe, but we ended up having too much fun visiting coffeehouses, shopping, and seeing every old building in Budapest to spend too much time on the computer.

So, to fill you in, Andrew's cousin Matt married a wonderful girl named Edit from Hungary on 7 January. We took advantage of the occasion to travel up to Europe for a week. Our flights just happened to have a 22-hour layover in Istanbul over New Year's Eve, so we thought, heck, why not? It ended up being a fabulous 22 hours. Unfortunately, we were so jetlagged we hit the sack around 8:30pm and missed all the fireworks. We still managed to be woken up about every hour or so but the drunken revelers running up and down the stairs in our hostel.

We managed to hit a few of the big attractions of Istanbul in our short time there - Aye Sofia/Hagia Sofia, a 1,500-year-old church-now-mosque-now-museum; the Blue Mosque; and, of course, Turkish Delight! (The dessert - not an actual location)

Istanbul was such an interesting city- much more modern than I'd expected, with delicious food. We stayed in a pretty touristy area downtown, but even the touts we encountered were polite and helpful. It was just enough of a taste to create a desire to spend more time there in the future.

But, we had to travel on! Our next flight took us to Vienna, Austria, where we enjoyed a meal at McDonald's and then boarded a bus headed for Budapest, Hungary. Stay tuned for another update soon...
