Info Flash on Cambodia

Andrew and I have been doing a lot of studying up on our future home of Cambodia. We wanted to share with you a few of the statistics we found interesting about Cambodia:

Location of  Cambodia  (green)in ASEAN  (dark grey)  —  [Legend]
Cambodia is located in Southeast Asia, with Thailand to the west, Vietnam to the east, and Laos to the north.

Cambodia was the location of the infamous Khmer Rouge Communist movement, led by Pol Pot, in which approximately 2 million people died between 1975-1979, due to mass executions, starvation and disease, making it one of the largest genocides in history.

Cambodia is also home to the famous Angkor Wat, a 12th-century Hindu temple that is on the Cambodian national flag and is an example of Khmer architecture.

Samaritan's Purse has been working in Cambodia for several years. It has several programs in place throughout the country, including agricultural education programs, school construcion, HIV/AIDS prevention, and household water filter distribution.

Poipet is the city we will be traveling to and living in. It is on the far northwest border of Cambodia and Thailand (in green above). Andrew will be working with the WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) projects, focusing on providing clean water sources for rural schools. Whitney will be working with a SP partner medical clinic in Poipet, providing primary care and rural village health visits.

Right now, we are in a whirl of packing up our stuff, selling off our unwanted belongings on Craigslist, finding a renter for our house, and completing our requirements for departure! I (Whitney) only have 3 weeks left of working at Children's Mercy in the ER, and I have to admit, I'm looking forward to the 10 day break I'll have before we depart!
